Typing listings is a good and traditionnal way for learning programming.
The principle is to give some exemples programs on paper to your students.
The first step is to get them to type the program in a text editor. They will learn to properly use the keyboard and to put the punctuation in the right place, not make typos.
The second step is running the program and see what it does. If it does not work, ask them to find the mistake in what they typed.
The third step is studying the program to understand why it does what it does.
The fourth step is let them modify the program, test and understand how they changed the program behavior.
The fifth step is writing their own program using the principles they learned.
